| Mayor’s Message
Spring is officially here but we are still waiting for spring-like temperatures, which will hopefully, be along soon. There is an old saying “Spring never misses its turn”.
Village Council and staff are preparing for the warmer months and the many obligations and activities these seasons present.
Previous bulletins have outlined the many projects that have been undertaken in our Village with the generous assistance of the provincial government and also to the extensive planning done by Council to encourage economic development and tourism in order to move Rexton forward. There are a number of additional projects being prepared which will be announced when the plans are finalized.
One of these initiatives is a British Car Show that will be held at the Bonar Law Historic Site this summer. This event will be a first for New Brunswick. The program for this event can be seen on our website at www.villageofrexton.com.
Another significant and unique event organized by our Regional Tourism Development group representing the tri communities of Saint-Louis-de-Kent, Richibucto and Rexton is the BANNER FESTIVAL. Designs will be drawn by people of all ages with the winning designs chosen for the large banners, which will be displayed in the three communities. To our knowledge this is also a first for New Brunswick.
Transportation
Council will be deciding what work will be done on Village streets this summer once we receive estimates for paving, etc.
The provincial Department of Transportation has committed $400,000.00 for the installation of curb and gutter and paving of Main Street (Highway 134) to complete the construction between Rexton and Richibucto. Village Council has agreed to install the sidewalk at the same time this work is being carried out.
DOT has also designated $50,000.00 to install a new culvert on Main Street near Water Street.
In addition, after many requests by present and past Councils, the Department of Transportation has committed five million dollars over the next two years to do much needed repairs on the Rexton Bridge. This is certainly good news due to safety concerns and weight restrictions. Although this work will no doubt cause some inconvenience, it is necessary for the future of our municipality. The work will be carried out by private contractors and will provide economic spin-off for our community.
This, along with the recent announcements of a new Middle School, new Nursing Home and new Health Services Center, certainly places the Village of Rexton in a positive economic position going forward.
Enjoy life and stay safe.
